Territoire de Belfort
The Territoire de Belfort is a department in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France and borders the Haut-Rhin in Alsace which was created in 1922 and formed part of the Alsace region which was retained by France between 1871 and 1919.
Belfort is the capital of the department and is divided into two parts by the river Savoureuse: the old town is on the east, full of old fashioned grocery and antique shops with a medieval castle and its fortifications which tempt many tourists whereas the west is more modern, industrial and commercial. The castle was used as a defence for the city on different occasions. Down the medieval castle stands a red-pink sandstone lion- an 11m high sculpture which symbolises Belfort's heroic stand in the Prussian War when it avoided being annexed unlike Alsace and Lorraine in 1870. The city is surrounded by stunning countryside which covers the wild and beautiful terrain of the Ballons des Vosges Natural Park.
Delle, the second city of the department, lies on the Swiss border and has some fine old houses from the 16th century and a carnival and chocolate festival takes place in March.
